SINCE 1992

BOTOX Cosmetic targets one of the underlying causes of frown lines and crow’s feet—the repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years. Your specialist will inject these muscles with BOTOX® Cosmetic to temporarily reduce muscle activity. You will begin to notice a visible smoothing of your crow’s feet lines and frown lines between your brows. BOTOX® Cosmetic works beneath the skin’s surface and targets the underlying muscle activity that causes frown lines and crow’s feet.

WHAT IS BOTOX?

Botox is a neurotoxin derived from Clostridium botulinum bacteria. It's commonly used for medical and cosmetic purposes, primarily to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines by temporarily paralyzing facial muscles.

Mechanism of Action: Botulinum toxin works by blocking signals from the nerves to the muscles, preventing muscle contraction. It does this by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that triggers muscle contractions.

Medical Uses: Botox is primarily known for its cosmetic applications, such as reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines. However, it also has several medical uses, including:
Treatment of muscle spasms and stiffness (e.g., in cervical dystonia, a condition causing neck muscle contractions).

Management of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Alleviation of chronic migraines.

Treatment of overactive bladder.

Control of involuntary eye muscle contractions (strabismus).

Cosmetic Uses: In the cosmetic field, Botox injections are commonly used to:
Smooth out wrinkles and fine lines, particularly in the forehead, around the eyes (crow's feet), and between the eyebrows (frown lines).
Lift the eyebrows and corners of the mouth.
Reduce the appearance of neck bands (platysma bands).
Diminish the presence of chin dimples and "gummy" smiles.
Procedure: Botox injections are typically administered by a trained healthcare professional, such as a dermatologist or plastic surgeon. The procedure involves injecting small amounts of the toxin into specific muscles using a fine needle. Multiple injections may be needed depending on the treatment area.

Duration of Effects: The effects of Botox injections are temporary and typically last for three to six months, after which muscle activity gradually returns, and wrinkles may reappear. With repeated treatments, the effects may last longer in some cases.

Safety Considerations: While Botox is generally considered safe when administered by qualified professionals in appropriate doses, it can cause side effects such as bruising, pain at the injection site, headache, and temporary muscle weakness. Rarely, more serious complications like drooping eyelids or difficulty swallowing can occur.

Precautions: Botox injections are not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with certain neuromuscular disorders, or those allergic to any ingredients in the formulation.

Overall, Botox has become a widely accepted and popular option for addressing both medical and cosmetic concerns related to muscle activity and facial appearance. However, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare provider to determine if it's a suitable treatment option for your specific needs and medical history.

Botox® Cosmetic contains onabotulinum toxin A. When this substance is injected, how it works is by simply relaxing the facial muscle underneath the skin to create a smooth and refreshed appearance. While this only targets the wrinkles that appear when you make facial expressions, you can consider getting an injectable filler treatment with hyaluronic acid at the same time for any wrinkles and creases that are permanently visible.
